Nicholas Smith is a ceramic artist, educator, and founder of The Clay Corner in Mammoth Lakes, California. Working primarily in stoneware, his practice bridges functional pottery and sculptural forms, drawing inspiration from the landscapes, textures, and rhythms of the Eastern Sierra. Smith began working in ceramics in 2010 and has been creating and teaching professionally since 2016. After studying ceramics through programs at Santa Monica College, University of Southern California, and Loyola Marymount University, he managed the teaching studio program at Good Dirt LA before relocating to Mammoth Lakes to establish a dedicated ceramics community in the Sierra region. His work explores the intersection of craftsmanship, utility, and material curiosity. Whether creating vessels, vases, or everyday functional ware, Smith is interested in how handmade objects become part of daily rituals and connect people to place. Experimentation, problem-solving, and a deep respect for the ceramic process remain central to his practice. As an educator, Smith is equally passionate about fostering creativity in others. Through The Clay Corner, he provides instruction, studio access, and opportunities for emerging ceramic artists throughout Mono and Inyo Counties. He views community building as an extension of his artistic practice and believes that creating space for others to make meaningful work is one of the most rewarding aspects of being an artist. Today, Smith continues to develop his own body of work while cultivating a growing ceramics community in Mammoth Lakes and the Eastern Sierra.
